PIVOT, the Progressive Vietnamese American Organization, proudly endorses Vice President Kamala Harris to be the next President of the United States of America. As a daughter of immigrants, Vice President Harris embodies the American dream that many Vietnamese Americans have for themselves and their children. That this is  a land of freedom, equality, and opportunity, where a child of immigrants can even  become the President of the United States. 

My name is Nguyễn Bích Hà. Like other women born and raised in Vietnam, when I was of age Imarried and then had children. But I was unfortunate, with the word “unfortunate” in quotation marks. I had only one daughter and she was my unique treasure, the only thing I ever had. When she was 11 years old, she already knew that the physical body she carried didn’t contain her soul, and she started speaking about this dysphoria with me.

I grew up surrounded by a large and resilient family of Vietnamese American refugees that endured so much to leave their home country behind and build a prosperous life in a completely new and unfamiliar place. However, growing up queer in Orange County, California it was hard to envision a life where I would be truly comfortable and accepted.

As May unfolds, we step into a month celebrating Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) heritage. It's a time to honor the rich cultural heritage, resilience, and contributions of Asian and Pacific Islander communities in the United States. In this commemorative month, PIVOT, the Vietnamese American Progressive Organization, stands alongside millions across the nation to amplify voices, recognize achievements, and prepare for the pivotal role APIAs will play in the 2024 elections.
