PIVOT Statement: Passage of the Big "Ugly" Bill
/July 2025
On July 3, 2025, the House of Representatives narrowly passed the so-called Big “Ugly” Bill in a 218-214 vote, a piece of legislation that will have long-lasting and damaging effects for millions of Americans. PIVOT is deeply disappointed in the passage of this bill.
This bill slashes funding for critical services like Medicaid, education, and housing, while increasing funding for agencies like ICE, further criminalizing immigrant communities. At the same time, the bill hands tax breaks to billionaires and corporations, deepening inequality and undermining public trust. Polls show that this bill is widely unpopular across party lines.
The fact that it passed by a margin of just 4 votes underscores how important elections are.
PIVOT was created to uplift progressive candidates and policies that serve our communities, not punish them. The passage of this bill reaffirms why we must stay engaged, organize, and hold elected officials accountable.
While the next election may still feel far away, our work to build our communities happens year-round. We’re building power and making sure voters know how their representatives voted, and what it means for their lives. And then when midterm elections happen next year, we’ll elect candidates that have our best interests in mind.
